Documenting Roof Damage

Photograph all damage from multiple angles. Include wide shots showing the overall area and close-ups of specific damage. Take photos from ground level and if safe, from a ladder. Include timestamps in your photos.

Record a video walkaround of your entire property. Narrate what you're seeing, point out specific damage, and provide context. Videos provide a comprehensive view that photos alone may miss.

If water has entered your home, document all interior damage. Photograph water stains, damaged ceilings, wet insulation, and any damaged personal property. This is often covered separately from roof damage.

Maintain a written log of all damage, when it occurred, and any actions taken. Keep receipts for temporary repairs, hotel stays (if displaced), and other expenses. Document all communications with insurance.

Have a certified roofer provide a written inspection report with photos. Professional documentation carries more weight with insurance companies and can help ensure all damage is identified and covered.

Keep all photos, videos, reports, receipts, and correspondence organized in one place. Create digital copies and physical backups. This organization will be invaluable throughout the claims process.
